What is Slate?

Slate is a fine-grained, metamorphic rock derived from sedimentary rock composed of clay or volcanic ash.

Slate has two lines of breakability, this is demonstrated upon the differing surfaces of smooth and riven slate within the showroom.

Slate-producing regions include Cornwall (famously the town of Delabole) and Wales in the UK, Liguria region in northern Italy expecially between the town of Lavagna (which means chalkboard in italian) and Fontebuona valley, Portugal. The east coast of Newfoundland, the Slate Belt of Eastern Pennsylvania, and the Slate Valley of Vermont and New York.

Slate can also be found in the Arctic and China has vast slate deposits, in recent years the export of finished and unfinished slate from China has increased sharply.

The word slate is derived from the late Middle English 'slat' or 'sclate'. This is in turn connected with the French verb 'esclater' meaning to break into pieces.
